Death Cab For Cutie // Kintsugi Cookies

Death Cab For Cutie Kintsugi cookies
I remember first hearing of Death Cab For Cutie in University (ahem..many years ago!) and immediately loving so many songs off of their Plans album. Recently, I’ve had The Ghosts of Beverly Drive on repeat from their latest album, Kintsugi. So you can imagine my excitement when I was approached to create some cookies for the band, inspired by “Kintsugi”, in time for their show at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto this week. So cool!

“Kintsugi” refers to a Japanese style of art where broken pieces of pottery are fused together with a lacquer mixed with gold. It treats breakage as part of the history an object, rather than something to disguise. I love this philosophy of finding beauty and value in restoration.

In this case, breaking the cookies and re-assembling them with icing didn’t seem like the most appetizing option. So to achieve this look, I piped Kintsugi-type patterns with icing and hand-painted them in edible gold. Personalized cookies were made for each band member for a warm welcome from the MLSE Live team – and luckily they loved their gift! I was excited to see this pop up on the MLSE Live Instagram feed:

Inspired by: Banana Republic

TwinningEmoji_BananaRepublic

If you follow me on Instagram you’ve probably noticed that almost every caption I write includes an emoji (or two, or three!) – I am an avid, enthusiastic and shameless emoji user. So when I was approached to create a design using the “twinning” emoji to celebrate the launch of Banana Republic’s new Ryan-Fit Floral Slim-Straight Pant, I was pretty excited.
BananaRepublic_RyanPant
The Ryan-Fit Slim Straight pant comes in a few different patterns and colours, but this floral painted print is the perfect way to brighten your wardrobe into Spring. I love the purples, pinks and blues and couldn’t wait to try my hand at re-creating these on the twinning emoji girls!
BananaRepublic_RyanFitFloral
I used a mixture of Wilton’s Rose Petal Pink gel colour and a tiny bit of Royal Blue for the pink portions, then progressively added more Royal Blue to achieve the purple, and finally the solid Royal Blue portions. Although it’s not necessary to mix colours like this, I find that adding little bits of each colour to the other help them complement one another in the final look.

If you love this print but are looking for some alternative styles, it also comes in this flattering Pencil Skirt and chic Dillon-Fit Shirt.

Inspired by: Canada Goose

Canada Goose Snow Mantra Cookie
We had a very mild start to winter here in Toronto – November and December were balmy compared to most years! But the chilly, sub-zero temperatures have finally started to kick in this month. The toques, boots, and winter coats are out, including the classic Canada Goose jackets renowned for their warmth.
Canada Goose Snow Mantra Cookie
I worked with the team at Canada Goose to create a design based upon their iconic red Snow Mantra parka, the warmest coat on Earth and ready for the harshest conditions. I knew instantly that it would be important to capture the incredible craftsmanship and detail on each piece.
Canada Goose Snow Mantra Cookie
I started by hand-cutting each cookie in the shape of the parka. I added a base layer of red icing for the jacket, and black for the hood. After letting those dry, I piped on the jacket details. I hand-painted various colours onto the icing “fur” to mimic the detail on the coat’s hood, and as a final touch added an edible printed image of the Canada Goose logo on each jacket (those details were simply too small to pipe by hand). It was so fun bringing this iconic Canadian piece to cookie form!

G.E.M. XXX Tour Cookies

GEM-9
Once in a while, a project comes along that completely catches me off-guard – in the best way possible. This was the case with one of my most recent sets, a very special order for Chinese pop star G.E.M., who is currently training at the aviation centre in the Netherlands to do a live performance in space (yes, space!!!).

GEM-8

As part of the G.E.M. XXX Tour she also made a stop in Toronto to play a show at the Air Canada Centre, and the team at MLSE Live wanted to celebrate her upcoming trip to space with a customized gift: decorated sugar cookies!

G.E.M. XXX Tour

They had some great design ideas in mind, and I got to work figuring out which techniques would best represent each one. The one I had the most fun with was the “space” design, airbrushed with black, deep purples and pinks. I mixed some white food colouring, silver lustre dust, and vodka together and hand-painted the stars onto each. I think those were the cookies that really tied together the other designs and gave the set a “galactic” feel.

It was such an honour – and so much fun – to work on this set with MLSE Live! To check out more of the backstage experience with G.E.M., you can visit the MLSE Live Instagram here

Eid Cookie Cutters

Eid cookie cutters
I recently had the chance to collaborate with Hello Holy Days!, a website sharing holiday ideas for Ramadan, Eid and Hajj. I created some festive designs with their new line of Ramadan and Eid cookie cutters, just in time for Eid this weekend!

Eid cookies

Eid cookies
This set was inspired by bright, bold colours and patterns that highlighted traditional shapes – kilims, 8-pointed stars, and lanterns. With a keen eye, you can spot these shapes popping up in many home décor pieces. For instance, I love these rugs recently featured in A Beautiful Mess’ small porch makeover.

Aside from the holidays, I can see so many uses for these cookie cutters – especially when creating cookie sets with multiple designs. The pattern possibilities are endless! If you’re interested in a little cookie DIY, these cookie cutters are available here.

Life // Lately

Even though summer hasn’t “officially” begun, we’ve been lucky to have plenty of warm, sunny days around here lately. I’ve taken full advantage on my days off, enjoying patio weather, heading to the beach, and hitting up my first outdoor concert of the season (that always screams summer, to me!).
Here’s a peek at what I’ve been up to lately:
